Midnight
An Erotic Short Story by Bre Stahls
___________________________

It was nearly midnight when she knocked.
No text, no warning; just three soft raps on his door.
He opened it and found her on the other side, wearing his hoodie.
Dark blue and worn, with small tears and little holes in all the wrong places, and water droplets from being caught in the rain on the way in.
She had the sleeves pulled over her hands and mascara smudged beneath her eyes.
He stepped aside and let her in.
She dropped her bag and walked straight in like she still lived there. Before the boyfriend. Before the shift in her consciousness. Before everything started to feel like moving on was just the next step.
He didn’t ask what happened, and instead offered her comforting silence, along with hot tea she didn’t drink.
She curled into the far corner of the sofa they once shared, knees tucked up, face half-buried in the oversized arms of her sleeves.
“We’re done,” she said finally, so quietly it was almost just a breath. “For real this time.”
He nodded but sat down in the worn leather chair across from her, keeping his distance.
She glanced up at him.
“You don’t have to be careful with me. I’m not gonna crack… any further than I already have, anyway…”
He wasn’t worried about her cracking; he was worried about himself. Worried about what this new status would mean for her; for them. But he gave her what she needed: presence, not pressure.
She talked for a while, voice shaking in places, sometimes going quiet mid-sentence. All the while, he listened with intent and concern. He knew she didn’t need his words; just a familiar space to be. To exist in her shock. To allow for the domino of emotions that would inevitably flow.
Eventually, after the full story had been thoroughly unveiled, her voice dropped to almost nothing; a gravelly, late-night whisper.
“You ever get tired of being the one everyone runs to?”
He looked at her for a long moment before crossing the room to sit next to her.
“Only when they run back from whence they came,” he said with half a grin; the left corner of his lip mischievously holding itself up.
She blinked. A slow, strange smile flickered and died as quickly as it had been born.
Not clumsily. Not desperately. Just existing; like it was inevitable.
He froze.
Her arms slipped around his neck. Her nose brushed his cheek. “I don’t want to be alone tonight.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t be here,” he said, hating how much it cost him to say it.
She pulled back just enough to meet his eyes. “Maybe I shouldn’t… do you want me to go?”
There was a quiet vulnerability in her eyes; a pleading for warmth and comfort—and maybe even a few emotions that had yet to be tapped.
There was no right answer. No clean choice. Only this moment, and the way her body fit against his like it was always meant to be there.
When she kissed him, he didn’t stop her.
He didn’t even try.
Her mouth tasted like spearmint chap stick, steam from her untouched tea, and saltwater from her air-dried tears.
The kiss deepened slowly, like they were both afraid it would vanish if they moved too fast. Her fingers slid into his hair. His hands anchored at her ribs, just below her breasts.
Each touch was tentative at first; then tighter, as if the moment would vanish if they didn’t hold on with enough precision and purpose.
When they finally pulled apart, their foreheads stayed pressed together.
“This doesn’t have to mean anything,” she whispered.
He didn’t answer, and instead let the silence float between their lips.
He couldn’t lie to her.
Not about this.
Again, he thought of what this would cost him.
As they slowly undressed each other, he accepted that whatever the price, he was willing to pay it in order to provide her with any semblance of happiness—however fleeting.
Each article of clothing was removed not with the frantic urgency of strangers, but with the tentative echo of memories that hadn’t yet been made; imprints that so far existed only in the subconscious corners of their minds.
She stripped off the hoodie and dropped it to the floor. Beneath it, a soft white tank top. No bra. He looked at her like she was the last good thing in the world.
“You’re so beautiful,” he said, almost in awe.
She shook her head. “Not tonight.”
“Especially tonight.”
She exhaled shakily, then reached for the hem of his shirt. He let her take it off. Her palms skated up his chest, slow and searching; testing the heat between them through the temperature of his skin.
The first time he touched her was careful; fingers trailing up her thighs, brushing the waistband of her cotton pyjama pants.
He pulled them down slowly, savoring every newly exposed inch of her skin with a whisper of his lips.
When he reached back up to the edge of her silky panties, he hesitated.
She answered his unspoken question by guiding his hand exactly where she wanted it.
He groaned, low and undone, at the way she opened under his touch.
“Are you sure?” he asked, struggling to keep his voice steady.
Her panties came down with a swift pull of her own hands before she sat back onto the couch.
This time, her legs spread, and one draped over his shoulder as he knelt in front of her.
He kissed her again; this time with hunger and anticipation as his fingers patiently explored her—soft, wet, wanting.
Her hips began moving to a rhythm she didn’t have to think about; a rhythm he controlled.
He slipped one finger inside her, then two.
He pumped them teasingly in and out as he kissed his way down her body.
She tilted her head back and bit her lip, whispering his name like it was the first time it had ever passed through her lips.
He landed between her legs and softly kissed her clit with his eyes locked on hers.
“Don’t stop,” she begged.
His mouth and fingers worked in tandem; tongue tracing lazy, reverent circles that made her thighs tremble. He held her as she moved against him, broken sighs and quiet gasps.
He worked her with devotion so intent that when she came, her entire body arched toward the ceiling like it had been waiting for this—just this.
She greedily pulled him up to her and kissed him like she needed him inside her right then. She slid his grey sweatpants and boxers off in one quick motion, exposing just how badly he wanted her, too.

Sliding his hands underneath her thighs, he lifted her to his chest. Her legs wrapped around his waist as he carried her to bed; her lips sliding against his with every step.
When they reached his room, he laid her down gently before grabbing a condom from the drawer he hadn’t opened in months.
She helped roll it on; palms steady, fingers tight, and eyes unreadable.
He kissed her once more before crawling into bed behind her; one arm underneath her shoulders, leaving his hand free to caress her right nipple. With his other hand on her hip, he pushed into her.
She made a tiny sound that came from the back of her throat—half relief, half surprise.
He buried his face in her neck, breathing her in, slow and deep.
They moved together like they’d been waiting their whole lives for this exact collision.
No performance. No rush. Just feeling. Wanting. Needing.
He whispered things that, up until now, he hadn’t meant to say aloud.
Called her beautiful again.
Told her he’d never wanted anything the way he wanted her.
That she felt so good. That she’d been worth the wait.
She didn’t answer with words; just held his face to hers and kissed him like she already knew they wouldn’t survive the morning.
When they came, it was both quiet and overwhelming.
His name on her lips.
Her nails in his back.
His breath caught in his throat.
Her body quivering around him.
Afterwards, she curled into his chest like it was the only place she’d ever belonged.
And for one long, fragile hour, he let himself believe maybe she’d stay.
Before drifting off to sleep.
⸻

The next morning, he woke before her.
The light was soft, slanting through the blinds in pale ribbons across her bare shoulder.
She was still snuggled into him; arm across his stomach, her leg tangled with his. His hand rested at the curve of her spine, his fingers splayed over her hip like it belonged there.
For a while, he didn’t move.
He just watched the way her lashes flickered against her cheek from her dreams; the way her lips parted slightly with each slow-drawing breath. He let himself memorize her like this.
Not in his dreams. Not in his fantasies.
But here.
Now.
Real.
When she stirred, she blinked up at him, sleepily and warm.
“Hey,” she murmured, voice crackling as she took in the scene.
“Hey.”
She stretched like a cat; one slow, sinuous motion; then rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling. He watched the shift in her expression—how the softness receded, replaced by something intangible but sharper.
A minute later, her phone buzzed.
She turned her head to reach for it and saw the name light up.
She hesitated, then slid out of bed, wrapping the blanket around her shoulders to keep her naked form warm in his absence.
“I just—give me a second.”
He nodded.
She disappeared into the living room. He stayed behind, listening to her faded voice; low and barely audible. He caught the muffled sound of her pacing and pausing; speaking softly, then softer still.
He got up to pull on a fresh T-shirt and boxers before sitting down at the edge of the bed to wait for her.
When she came back, she stood in the doorway for a long moment before walking over.
Her face was unreadable, but her eyes were sad; remorseful.
“He called,” she said.
“I figured.”
“He apologized. Profusely. Said he wants to talk… try again.”
He nodded, unable to form words as his stomach twisted in pain.
“I think I’m going to,” she added.
When he still didn’t speak, she knelt in front of him—his blanket still wrapped around her—and placed her hand over his.
“I didn’t come here to confuse things,” she whispered. “I didn’t mean to use you.”
“I know,” was all he said.
However painful it was to hear, he knew she meant it.
She searched his face. “Last night… it was…”
“Don’t,” he said gently.
“Don’t try to minimize it so it’s easier to leave. Just… let it live here, where it belongs.”
She blinked hard and bit her lip as her eyes became glassy and full.
He gingerly squeezed her hand—just for a moment—then let it go.
She leaned in and pressed a kiss to his cheek.
“Thank you,” she said, with the same permanence as a goodbye.
He didn’t watch her get dressed.
He didn’t walk her to the door.

Didn’t watch her leave.
Just sat there on the edge of the bed with his head in his hands, listening to the quiet click of the door as it closed behind her.
